Shipyard - visiting
the shipyard
The shipyard is open to the public six days a week, enabling
everyone to closely follow the construction of the eighteenth
century Ship of the Line 'De Delft'.
exhibition
To provide the visitors with all possible information about
the project, we have arranged an exhibition. Various matters
are reviewed such as the building of the ship, the history,
life at sea, the battle of Camperdown and much more. In the
movie theater, the documentary "The many lives of 'De Delft'
, will take you back to the 18th century. Dutch language
only.
restaurant
After all this information you can drink a cup of tea or coffee
in our restaurant. From there you can enjoy a magnificent view
of the Maas,
or if you please, keep an eye on the activities in the workshops.
footbridge
If you want to take a closer look at the progress of building
the ship, you have direct access from the restaurant to the
workshops. An elevated footbridge gives a great view in the
various shops where the parts of the ship are crafted. These
shops are:
the
frame shop
the ornament carvers
the forge
the blocks shop and
mould loft floor & rigging loft
The 1:10 scale model is built next to the footbridge in the
frame shop. |

On the footbridge you will find an exhibition as well. The
shown artifacts were excavated from the wreck in the North

quay
After the footbridge, the tour continues outside. Now you find yourself
on the quay, in the watery breeze from the Maas. On the quay, next to a pontoon
you will see the keel. Here the ship will be build. Out of the
shops, the parts will be placed on the quay. Then a crane will hoist
them into their right place, after which the parts are joined. |

gift
shop
The end of the tour will bring you back inside the visitor center
again at the exhibition where you started. We hope that, after your
visit to the yard of 'De Delft', you will be as enthusiastic about
the project as we are, and thus become a Friend of 'De Delft'. In
our gift shop you can buy a so-called 'Aanmonsterpakket' and we throw
in the latest 'Scheepsjournaals' into the bargain. If these terms
mean nothing to you and you want to know more, please read the section
called EMBARK.
In our shop, the special 'De Delft' articles are sold, as well as
books and nautical items, such as binoculars and compasses.
choir
December last year, the mixed choir 'De Delft' was founded and sings
of the rich seaman's life. The choir consists of 20 enthusiastic vocalists
and one accordionist. They play shanty's, the songs which the sailors
sang at the different activities on board. They also play other songs
about the seaman's life, the ships, the city of Rotterdam and the
harbour. The choir practices full of enthusiasm every other weekend
on the shipyard of 'De Delft', on which occasion you, as a visitor,
can enjoy their music. To visit the choir in session, see NEWS - AGENDA
for the planned dates.
