a group of volunteers of De Delft, led by Gerard Quint, Els
Heyboer and Rien Soetens, it was finally there. For the first

Racing dragonboats is an ancient Chinese tradition, going as
far back as the fourth century b.C. and is based on an old oriental
saga.
Boats vary in length from 12 to 24 meters and have a crew of
22 to 50 paddlers. |

to se and hear the boats sprint to the finish under the beat
of the large drum on each boat to set the pace. |

Large pontoons marked the border
of the racing track, to keep out the waves caused by tidal movements
of the river Maas and the wake of large ships. The quality of
the track was highly spoken of by the participants of the race.
An added bonus that comes with organizing a boat race at a shipyard
is the presence of skilled hands to repair damages that would
otherwise keep the team from continuing the games. |
