Duyfken, the (Dutch) Royal Navy and the Marine
Corps at 'De Delft'
On Tuesday, May 14, the day had come. The
naval vessel Hr. Ms. Urk and the "roadshow" of the
Marine Corps had already arrived. The waitig was now for the
Duyfken. About half past five she arrived and was welcomed by
employees and volunteers of 'De Delft', the Royal Navy and the
Marine Corps.
Early Wednesday, May 15 and Thursday, May 16,
people flocked from all quarters to see the Duyfken and our
other guests. On the quay, the guys from the Marine Corps had
build a 10-meter high climbing tower. Furthermore there was
a photo exhibition which gave an impression of the training
given by the Royal Navy and the Marine Corps and everyone was
given the chance to take a look on Hr. Ms. Urk.
Wednesday evening we concluded a successful day with a reception
for our sponsors and other invited guests.
More than a 100 people were present, among them were the Mayor
of Rotterdam mr. I. Opstelten, this although it was election
day, as well as the ambassador of Australia mr. Hussin and his
wife.
On Thursday there was an informal drink on the
quay for the crew of both the Urk and the Duyfken, and all volunteers
who had worked hard these two days.
Luckily the weather was beautiful so more than 1700 visitors
found their way to the Shipyard 'De Delft' and enjoyed themselves.
We are proud to say that the visit
of the Duyfken was a smashing success!!!
Of course, we presume that 'De Delft' will be just as great
a success.
We hope to continue in welcoming many more interested visitors.
Specially when that moment arrives for 'De Delft' to sail
the seas under full sail, with Rotterdam as her home port.
